Lakeland Residents Voice Concerns Over Infrastructure Challenges

Residents of Lakeland are increasingly vocal about infrastructure challenges affecting their daily lives. A recent citywide survey, which garnered 5,270 responses, highlighted traffic congestion, flooding, and aging systems as top concerns. Commissioners acknowledge these frustrations align with feedback they’ve received from the community.

Consultant Monica Gould, speaking at the city’s strategic planning retreat, emphasized the need for funding to address these issues, stating, “If the number one concern and priority for citizens is traffic congestion, how do we fund those projects?”

Flooding remains a significant problem, particularly in areas like the Citrus Center Colony, a 55-and-older mobile home community off W. Beacon Road. Residents report repeated flooding, even after routine afternoon showers. Carol Coy, a resident, described the situation as “one of the most frustrating things I think I’ve ever been through.”

City officials are aware of these challenges and are exploring solutions to improve infrastructure and alleviate residents’ concerns. However, addressing these issues requires substantial funding and strategic planning to ensure the city’s growth does not outpace its infrastructure capabilities.
